Many athletes spice up their workouts by drinking a Red Bull before they hit the gym. The beverage contains caffeine, which boosts ...
energy levels and makes workouts easier and more intense. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, improves cardiorespiratory endurance by increasing fat use and sparing glycogen (stored carbohydrate) and boosts muscle endurance by improving the link between muscle activation and contraction. Scott Forbes and colleagues from the University of Saskatchewan found that Red Bull improved bench press endurance, but had no effect on peak or average power during a sprint test on a stationary bicycle (Wingate test). Most studies found that caffeine and caffeinated beverages improved muscle endurance, but did not increase maximum muscle strength or power. This study showed that Red Bull could help athletes to get through long, difficult training sessions. (International Journal Sport Nutrition Exercise Metabolism, 17: 433-444, 2007)
