Gains in strength and muscle from weight training occur in proportion to blood testosterone ...  levels. Researchers from the Drew College of Medicine in Los Angeles depressed normal testosterone with drugs (GnRH) and then administered various doses of testosterone supplements. Subjects with higher levels of testosterone gained more strength and muscle. Danish researchers confirmed these results in subjects with drug-induced depression of testosterone. Eight weeks of weight training caused minimal changes in muscle mass or strength in subjects with low blood testosterone levels following administration of GnRH. Blood levels of testosterone are critical for increasing muscle and strength with weight training. Low blood levels of testosterone will decrease your capacity to gain muscle and strength from weight training. (American Journal Physiology Endocrinology Metabolism, 291:1325-1332, 2006)
