From the looks of Mike Vallely’s recent visit to Mexico City,
either he’s got a popular TV show going on down there or this is visual
evidence of some next level shit, further proving that skateboarding
has truly reached the globalization phase. Yup, 120,000 of ‘em on the
scene to witness professional skateboarding from one man.
Whats all the fuss? Here is an excdertp courtesy of Mike's MySpace Blog
Mike
just returned home from a quick trip down to Mexico City, Mexico where
he was to put on a skate demo. It was Mike's first trip to Mexico City
since 1991. Let the viewing begin...

Mike ready to board the plane at LAX. We had no idea what we were in for.

My breakfast of champions.

Ready for take off.

Arriving
in Mexico City... Here are some kids that had camped out at the airport
to meet Mike at his arrival. This should have tipped us off as to what
was to come.

Autographs for the kids.

Cell phone pic to email your kids that you saw Mike V at the airport!

After
being picked up at the airport and a quick meal we were off to a tv
studio for an interview. But before hand Mike was asked to do a bit of
skating for b-roll for his interview.

Not the greatest skating conditions but Mike makes it happen with a bean plant down the stairs.

Arriving at the tv studio.

Final preparations for the interview.

Mike with tv announcer guy.

Snickers. Eat the world.

Interview in full effect.

Mike
taking a photo with the camera jib operator. One thing I found
interesting was everyone seems fascinated with Mike's skateboard. They
wanted to hold it, check it out and have it visible in their photos.

Obligatory group shot.

The
next day is when things went next level. Early in the morning we had
time to kill before we had to be at the demo so Mike wanted to hit the
streets and get loose before the demo. We didn't know where we were
headed but we ended up skating towards the demo which was being held in
the center of town. As we got closer to the demo location kids started
to recognize Mike.

Everyone wanted to get there photo with Mike. Photos are the new autograph.

Kids waiting for their turn for a photo.

Word was spreading quickly that Mike was out on the streets via kids text messaging their friends.

Pics, pics, pics, and more pics.

The crowd in the streets was now beginning to block traffic.

It wasn't long before the police were on the scene. That's when we decided to split back to our hotel.

When the cops caught up to us, we thought we were busted for sure. Turns out they just wanted a photo with Mike.

Now back at the hotel a full crowd scene was beginning to form to meet Mike.

More time out for photos.

After a quick refreshment at the hotel we were driven to the demo.

Kids shredding in the streets.

The
streets were so packed that we had to have a police officer come along
in the van to help clear the streets and escort us through the crowds.

The crowd thickens.

Mike arrives in the VIP tent.

A few moments of peace before the storm.

Mike doing an interview for an internet tv show.

After the interview Mike did a meet and greet with 30 lucky contest winners.

Home made Mike V shirt.

Rise Above!

Mike's signature makes that shirt priceless.

Signed photos.

Promo girls for one of the demos sponsors.

More press for tv.

Interview for a MTV TRL type show.

These chicks were crazy.

Extreme close up.

Every tv station in Mexico City and surrounding areas showed up to interview Mike.

Everyone that came though the VIP tent wanted to meet Mike and get a photo and autograph.

The crowd was now nearing 100,000 screaming fans.

Security and the production staff were starting to show concerns for Mike's safety if he tried to skate.

Val who was our escort and translator for the trip was really starting to worry.

The amount of people wanting to interview Mike was insane.

Security rushing into the VIP tent to stop kids from trying to scale the walls in get in.

Val with her new Mike V deck.

Security
was now reporting that the crowd was reaching 120,000 people and the
barricade around the ramps Mike was to skate had been broken down.

More photo opportunities with Mike.

A local skater showing Mike some of his handplant variations.

Signing a cast of a broken leg.

Security
was able to regain a bit of control and clear off the ramps that Mike
was to skate on. Notice all the trash and foot prints on the ramps from
when the course was trampled by over-excited fans.

Mexico City Police were now called in to guard Mike as the crowd was nearing riot like conditions trying to get at him.

Mike in disbelief when we received word that the demo was cancelled due to concerns for his safety.

Mike greeting and apologizing to the crowd for not being able to skate.

Mike with 120,000 of his fans.

Now it was time to escape. Here we are trying to get to our van and being attacked by Popperatzi and fans.

Everyone rushing at Mike.

The van was under attack as we escaped and headed to the airport.

Mike signing one last autograph as we waiting to board our plane to head back to Los Angeles.
