Intermittent exercise— exercise sessions interrupted by rest— is effective because it’s more tolerable than continuous exercise, yet produces the same improvements in aerobic capacity. It’s easy to run out of energy during continuous exercise, which increases the perception of effort. Researchers from Appalachian State University in North Carolina found ...
that drinking Gatorade during 2 hours of cycling with 3 minutes rest every 10 minutes (2.6 hours total for the workout) reduced the perception of effort during the later stages of exercise. The Gatorade group had higher blood sugar and lower cortisol levels. Cortisol is a stress hormone associated with intense exercise. (Medicine Science Sports Exercise, 39: 880–885, 2007)
