Intense exercise breaks down tissue and increases protein metabolism during recovery to build muscle and connective tissue and repair injured tissues. Protein balance remains negative unless the body has
adequate protein and energy available for protein synthesis and muscle growth. Post-exercise protein and carbohydrate feeding promotes protein synthesis, prevents protein breakdown and enhances the adaptive response to exercise. Athletes should ingest protein following exercise to create a positive protein balance and maximize muscle growth. The amino acid leucine is particularly important for promoting protein synthesis after training. (Sports Medicine, 37:895-906, 2007)
