Beer is a health food … when consumed in moderation. Drinking two beers per day reduces the risk of stroke, heart attack and blood vessel disease. A pint of beer contains the same amount of polyphenols as a glass of red wine. Polyphenols are powerful antioxidants that buffer the effects of free radicals linked to aging, genetic damage and depressed immunity. Beer increases the good cholesterol HDL and is high in a variety of vitamins and minerals. Spanish researchers found that moderate beer consumption might prevent Alzheimer’s disease, which is linked to aluminum accumulation in the brain. Beer contains silicone, which reduces the aluminum uptake in the digestive system and slows aluminum buildup in the brain. Beer has a dark side: it increases the risk of accidents, domestic violence, bad behavior and obesity. However, moderate beer drinking is good for most people.
