Creatine and protein powder are popular athletic supplements with proven benefits for increasing
muscle mass, strength and power. Colostrum, the pre-milk fluid produced by the mammary glands of all nursing mothers (human and animal), is another promising supplement that stimulates growth hormone release, strengthens the immune system and promotes tissue growth. Creatine works by increasing muscle creatine phosphate levels and stimulating protein synthesis. Protein supplements, when taken before or after training, increase amino acid availability (building blocks of protein) and also stimulate protein synthesis. If they are effective by themselves, it seems reasonable they would work better together. University of Oklahoma scientists showed that protein or colostrum combined with creatine boosted bodyweight and lean mass (mainly muscle) better than protein alone or protein plus colostrum in college-aged men involved in a 12-week weight-training program. The results might have been caused by the creatine because the experiment did not include a creatine-only group. (Nutrition 23: 647–656, 2007)
