A tuna shortage in Japan is forcing chefs to substitute cheaper fish in sushi, sashimi and avocado rolls. Japan’s aggressive fishing policies have
thinned the ocean of tuna, shark and swordfish. Japanese fishing industry representatives claim the tuna shortage is due to increased demand stimulated by the increased popularity of sushi in the United States, China and Russia. An international fishing commission agreed to decrease tuna catches by 20 percent. However, the tuna population will continue declining because of illegal and unreported catches. Environmentalists have criticized Japan’s fishing policies for more than 25 years. At the rate tuna are disappearing, tuna sandwiches may soon be a thing of the past. We wonder…what does spam sushi taste like? (The New York Times, June 27, 2007)
