Although marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug on the planet, there is only a small amount of research on the long term effect the drug has on the human brain. Recently, scientists in Australia did a study to find out why they call it "dope".
Researchers recruited 15 people who smoke heavily -- over 5 joints a day for more than 10 years -- and compared the smoker's MRIs to 16 people who don't smoke pot. The scientists also tested the subjects learning ability and tested for psychotic symptoms. The scientists found that parts of the brain (hippocampal and amygdala) were smaller in relation to the control group. Also there was a higher chance of psychotic symptoms in the smokers. Pot heads scored significantly worse in verbal learning tests.
So there you have it. Its not called "dope" for nothing.
