One result of high blood pressure is slowing mental performance. If you want to do something about it, you can start eating like a Euro. People in Mediterranean countries, such as Spain, Italy and Greece, have lower rates of coronary artery disease, heart attack and stroke than those living in Northern Europe and the United States. Some health experts think
the Mediterranean diet— high in lean meats, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, olive oil and wine— may be a factor. Spanish researchers studied the effects of moderate consumption of olive oil on blood fats, body mass index (measure of weight proportion to height) and blood pressure in men from Northern and Central Europe. The olive oil was responsible for a 3 percent decrease in the systolic blood pressure (highest blood pressure number), but had no effect on diastolic blood pressure (lowest number). This study showed that moderate consumption of olive oil could reduce blood pressure. (Journal Nutrition, 137:84-87, 2007)
