Caffeine is a powerful central nervous system stimulator that’s widely
used by football players, throwers, endurance athletes and
weightlifters.
It triggers the release of epinephrine (adrenaline) from the adrenal glands, which increases energy levels and prepares the body for high-intensity effort. It increases strength and power by stimulating the release of calcium in the muscles’ cells, which increases the contraction strength of the muscles. It also improves endurance by mobilizing free fatty acids and sparing muscle and liver glycogen (critical fuels for intense endurance exercise). Until recently, caffeine was on the banned substances list in many sports. Curiously, it’s now approved for use in Olympic sports (however, it’s on a watch list). The drug is relatively safe, but can cause abnormal heart rhythms and seizures at high dosages. In summary, caffeine has wide-ranging effects on performance: it mobilizes the central nervous system, boosts fat oxidation and increases muscle contraction capacity.
