A day of skiing includes hundreds of turns involving sustained muscle contractions and a series of sudden impacts that force the legs and hips to act like shock absorbers. Even fit skiers feel pain and burning in the legs during the first few days on the snow. Researchers from St. Cloud State University, led by John Seifert, found that consuming a total of 1,620 milliliters Accelerade— containing carbohydrate, protein, electrolytes and vitamins C and A (total of 98 grams of carbs and 24 grams of protein)— reduced measures of muscle damage (creatine kinase, myoglobin and cortisol) compared to skiers consuming a placebo or no fluids. A study of marine recruits in boot camp who consumed a protein-carbohydrate supplement each day after training found similar results (J Appl Physiol, 96: 951-956, 2004). Taking a protein-carbohydrate supplement during and after training is a good practice for any intensely training athlete, such as bodybuilders, or those who play football, soccer or tennis.
