Muscle-building supplements sometimes contain a lot more than whey protein and creatine. U.S. Olympic drug-testing lab at UCLA found banned anabolic steroids in four of five muscle-building supplements they tested. The BALCO scandal showed that chemists could beat sports drug tests by supplying athletes with undetectable steroids. Altering a drug’s chemical structure slightly can make it undetectable without changing its effectiveness. Dr. William Obermeyer, vice president for research at dietary supplement testing laboratory ConsumerLab.com, said that several companies have been marketing supplements containing chemically altered anabolic steroids. Widespread drug testing in Olympic, professional and college sports has made these products highly desirable. Typically, companies don’t list the ingredients, but promote the products using buzzwords such as "muscle-building." The cat and mouse game between drug testers and athletes continues.
