Many motivated athletes try to get big and strong using the “Rocky Balboa” training method: Spend every waking moment involved in superhuman monster workouts. Many motivated athletes try to get big and strong using the “Rocky Balboa” training method: Spend every waking moment involved in superhuman monster workouts. Muscle responds to sustained high tension, but muscle hypertrophy and strength increases occur during recovery— after the workout is over. British muscle physiologist Michael Rennie found that the body stops building new muscle during exercise. Calcium is the likely signaling chemical that shuts down protein synthesis. Other studies from Atko Viru from Estonia showed that the movement of amino acids— the building blocks of proteins— slows down if one intense workout is followed too closely by another. Protein synthesis and muscle growth are closely linked to amino acid transport in the cells. These theoretical studies rendered some very practical information— protein synthesis and muscle growth occur during recovery; plan regular rest days in your program to maximize gains in muscle growth and strength; planned rest is just as important as heavy training.
