In ancient South Pacific societies, people would row great distances over open water in outrigger canoes. Nowadays they take a plane, but the sport remains. Now they compete in outrigger canoe races in open water that takes stamina, power and courage. Maintaining blood sugar is a key element for performance in the sport. Key amino acids, such as leucine, are particularly important for maintaining blood sugar. The most significant sources for blood sugar during exercise are the diet, liver and muscle glycogen and gluconeogenesis. In the later process, the liver converts the amino acids from proteins into blood sugar (gluconeogenesis). Proteins act as time-released blood sugar capsules to maintain a constant flow of energy to the brain and muscles. You feel more alert and can exercise longer. Australian researchers found that supplementing the diet of outrigger canoeists with leucine improved endurance and upper body power. Supplying the body with the right fuels when it needs them is an important part of a successful sports nutrition program. (Eur J Appl Physiol, 29: 1-9, 2005)
