The body uses carbohydrates as its main fuel during exercise when intensity exceeds 65 percent of maximum effort. Carbohydrates come from diet (blood sugar), muscle and liver glycogen and gluconeogenesis. Gluconeogenesis, which occurs in the liver and to a lesser extent in the kidneys, converts amino acids (building blocks of proteins), lactate and pyruvate into new blood sugar. This process becomes progressively more important as muscles and the liver use stored glycogen and carbohydrate from the last meal. Glutamine is a key amino acid during and after exercise because it’s vital for immune, nervous, gastro-intestinal and metabolic function. University of Iowa researches found that glutamine supplements improved carbohydrate metabolism in dogs during and after exercise. Glutamine supplements promoted blood sugar production and use during and after exercise. Glutamine had a significant effect on carbohydrate metabolism, which might warrant its use as a training supplement. However, the study didn’t demonstrate any change in performance. Glutamine supplement studies have been inconsistent: some show improvements in immune function and preventing overtraining, while others found no effects. (J Appl Physiol, 99: 1858-1865, 2005)
