Beer, scotch and gin have never been included as part of the “breakfast
of champions.” Many recent studies have found beneficial effects of
moderate alcohol consumption.
But, in the aggregate, alcohol and athletic performance don’t go together. Excess alcohol consumption is linked to accidents, poor motor performance, heart cell destruction, liver disease, violence and absenteeism. Researchers from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in Bethesda, MD found that people who drink the most alcohol eat the unhealthiest diets. Their study of nearly 4,000 adults compared people’s diets with the dietary recommendations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Binge drinkers (high alcohol volume, infrequently) had the worst diets, while frequent, low-quantity drinkers consumed the healthiest diets. The study reinforced the concept that healthy behaviors are interconnected. (American Journal Epidemiology, 163: 359-366, 2006)
