The purpose of exercise training is to stress the body so it adapts and improves its function. Excessive training leads to tissue breakdown, slow recovery and an inability to adapt.
Japanese researchers reviewed the effects of amino acid supplements on the capacity to recover and adapt to intense training. They concluded that a mixture of amino acids that included branched-chain amino acids, arginine and glutamine was best for preventing muscle damage and facilitating improvements in fitness. The aggregate results of many studies suggest that taking amino acids or protein supplements before or after intense training will promote recovery and maximize training gains.
