People who consume a Mediterranean diet— high in olive oil, pasta, fruits, vegetables, nuts, lean meats and red wine— live longer and have a lower risk of heart disease and cancer compared to people on Western-style diets.
Olive oil may be the key. A study from the Monell Chemical Senses
Center in Philadelphia found that extra-virgin olive oil contains a
compound called oleocanthal, which mimics the action of the pain
reliever in Advil® (ibuprofen). Long-term consumption of ibuprofen
decreases blood vessel inflammation, promotes blood vessel health,
prevents blood platelets from clumping together (which can block
arteries), reduces the risk of some types of cancer and lowers levels
of protein that accumulate during the development of Alzheimer's
disease. This was one of the first studies to explain the health
benefits of olive oil and the Mediterranean diet. (Nature, 437: 45-46,
2005)
