Blood testosterone levels are critical for building strength. Many athletes take zinc supplements to boost levels of this important hormone.
Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in tissue repair, bone
formation, sex hormone regulation, immunity and fuel metabolism. The
recommended daily allowance for zinc is 15 milligrams per day.
Many athletes are zinc deficient because exercise causes increased loss
of the mineral in sweat and urine. Turkish scientists found that using
zinc supplements (3 milligrams of zinc per kilogram bodyweight per day)
boosted testosterone and thyroid hormones in wrestlers involved in
heavy training. They didn’t measure the effects of this supplement on
performance or changes in plasma volume, so their results may have been
due to thickening of the blood and concentrating the testosterone. Is
supplemental zinc a good idea? The zinc intake used in this study was
far above RDA. High zinc intake can be toxic and lead to decreased
copper absorption, nausea and vomiting. Good dietary sources of zinc
include poultry and seafood. (Neuroendocrinology Letters, 27: 101–107,
