Americans are some of the Work time naps increase productivityhardest working people in the world. We work longer hours and get less vacation than people living in other industrialized countries. Taking a nap during the day is viewed as slothful. That’s a mistake. Sleep is essential for mental alertness and a strong immune system. The body is pre-programmed to induce sleepiness at night and in the late afternoon.

Late afternoon sleepiness can lead to decreased productivity and an increased risk of accidents. Sleep experts recommend that people who have time should give in to the urge to sleep and take a 15 to 20 minute nap. Napping boosts mental and physical performance for the rest of the afternoon. Increase the effectiveness of afternoon naps by napping in peaceful surroundings; timing your nap for when you feel sleepiest during the afternoon; planning enough time for your nap so you can wake gradually and not be groggy for the rest of the afternoon; and cutting short the nap if you can’t fall asleep. You can also jumpstart your afternoon by getting plenty of sleep the night before, consuming high protein foods at lunch (i.e., help to maintain blood sugar longer), take a short walk and sit in the sun during the day (brightens mood).
