Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a fatty chemical (phospholipid) found in cell membranes and is made mainly from soybeans.
The supplement reduces the cortisol response to exercise. Cortisol
reduces protein synthesis during recovery and may decrease endurance
capacity. PS supplements might assist in the adaptation to exercise
training, prevent overtraining and influence other hormones, such as
testosterone, that affect fitness. Researchers from the United Kingdom
found that endurance capacity increased in men who took PS supplements
for 10 days (750 milligrams per day). The subjects did not show a
decrease in cortisol levels, so the mechanism behind the improved
exercise capacity is unknown. PS may be a beneficial supplement for
endurance athletes. However, the cost of taking the dosage used in this
study might be excessive for most. (Med & Sci in Spts & Exer,
