People get more colds and flu during the winter because they come in contact with a lot of people indoors. Gyms and health clubs are notorious breeding grounds for contagious diseases.
Sweat, heavy breathing, coughing and close proximity add up to an illness waiting to happen. During exercise the body uses its energy to regulate internal temperature and control metabolism. You can only fight off so much stress. The body has trouble fighting off germs when it’s trying to adjust to the stresses of exercise— particularly during intense training. Be vigilant about germs: wipe down the seats of exercise machines with a towel before using them, demand that the management maintain a sanitary facility, wash your hands frequently and cover any cuts and scrapes. Wear sandals in the locker room and use a clean towel every time you shower. Get plenty of sleep and eat lots of fruits and vegetables to boost your immune system. Balance rest and exercise training to prevent illness. (MSNBC.com, Oct. 3, 2006)
