Exercise prevents colon cancer and possibly cancers of the reproductive system. However, because active people get more sun exposure, they are at increased risk of skin cancer, including the melanoma— the deadliest form. Rutgers University scientists found that a combination of caffeine and exercise protected against skin cancer that was greater than no treatment or exercise or caffeine alone. The study used mice that were exposed to ultraviolet-B radiation. The combination caused destruction of precancerous skin cells. The National Cancer Institute reported that Americans develop 1 million new cases of skin cancer per year. The scientists thought that it was likely that their results in mice would also apply to humans. Don’t stop using sunscreen, but you might prevent skin cancer by taking a caffeine pill or shot of espresso before exercising in the sun.
