Intense weight training makes the heart work harder.
Iranian researchers found that elite weight-trained athletes have larger aortas than normal, which increases the risk of aortic regurgitation (back flushing of blood into the heart). The study examined 100 male athletes who were subdivided into groups according to years of training. They found that the aorta was larger in more experienced athletes. Many studies have shown that intense weight training increases heart size, but there is little evidence that these changes cause any health problems. Cardiac and aortic size decrease when athletes scale down on high-intensity training. (American Journal Cardiology, 100:528-530, 2007)
