Salbutamol (called albuterol in the United States and sold as Ventolin)— is a b2-adrenergic agonist drug (assists adrenaline) used to treat airway spasms in people with asthma.
The International Olympic Committee, except for athletes given medical exemption, bans it. British researchers determined that salbutamol was also anabolic and worked by binding to androgen receptors in muscles. This study showed that salbutamol has similar effects to anabolic steroids, such as testosterone. Another British study showed that salbutamol increased quadriceps and hamstring muscle strength, but did not affect lean body mass in healthy men.
