Beer and college students go together like Laurel and Hardy, Paparazzi and Britney Spears, and Barry Bonds and home runs. That bit of nostalgia is old news: according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, college students and teens increasingly like to binge on hard booze. Young binge drinkers are swilling down five or more drinks of hard liquor at a time, which is becoming a significant public health problem. They are more likely to drive drunk and practice unprotected sex. Still, nearly 75 percent of people binge on beer because of its easy availability. Some cities are trying to control youthful binge drinkers by holding their parents responsible for underage drinking occurring in their homes with fines up to $1,000 and jail time.
