Pseudoephedrine is an important ingredient in many cold medications. It’s a central nervous system stimulant, but is not on the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) list of banned substances.
This is curious because the drug has structural similarities to ephedrine and amphetamines. Researchers from Great Britain found that runners given pseudoephedrine (2.5mg per kilogram bodyweight) 20 minutes before a 1,500-meter time trial improved performance by 6 seconds compared to when they took a placebo (fake pseudoephedrine). The drug works by increasing heart rate, cardiac contractility (strength of the heart contraction), venous return (return of blood to the heart), cardiac output and delivery of blood to working muscles. Pseudoephedrine was removed from the IOC’s banned list years ago. That may change in light of this study. (Medicine Science Sports Exercise, 38: 329-333, 2006)
