Teen binge drinking has gotten out of hand across America, and cities are doing something about it. In the old days, the police would give offending teenagers a slap on the wrist or haul them off to juvenile hall.
This approach hasn’t worked, so police are ramping up enforcement of anti-teen drinking laws by punishing the parents. Some cities fine parents $2,500 or more for home parties involving underage drinking. Increasingly, cities are passing civil ordinances that allow police to fine parents on the spot if they observe underage drinking. Other cities require parents to pay the police costs for breaking up parties. It looks like the party is over for parents who allow teen drinking at home. (USA Today, Jan. 5, 2007)
