Athletes take anabolic steroids to increase, strength, power and training intensity. Some endurance athletes take steroids, but the drugs may not boost their performance.

Endurance and power are critical components in endurance sports such as running, cycling and swimming, so steroids may enhance performance in these sports. Steroids may make these athletes train harder. Researchers from Switzerland found that low-dose oral anabolic steroids had no effect on markers of physical stress in runners involved in intense training. They examined testosterone, cortisol, epinephrine and dopamine. Athletes usually take higher doses of steroids than were used in this study, so we can’t say for sure if the drugs don’t promote training intensity.
