Last week we were invited to ride a bunch of bikes from the Trek/Gary Fisher fleet on the rocks and dirt in Fruita, Colorado, and like anyone, we said, "Hell yeah! Duh!" Sounds like a dream come true, so we packed up the SuperHuman Eurovan and hit the high desert of Western Colorado.
Day one was spent on the Loma loops and day two at the 18 Road trails. My bike of choice at Loma was the Trek Remedy, but up at 18 Road I had the chance to put four other rigs to the test. One of which was this Gary Fisher Superfly 100 full suspension steed.
First off, I've ridden a few 29ers and so far, I think I'm a pretty die hard 26 inch wheel fan. I'm just under 6 feet tall and I just feel more solid with smaller wheels and having a lower center of gravity, so with that in mind, here is very briefly what I thought of the Superfly 100:
It was lightweight. And for a bigger guy, I think it would be a lot more nimble, but I could not get real comfortable in tight turns. But don't get to thinking that I am saying that a 29er handles better for larger riders. I've got a buddy who is about my size who can smoke me in any tight midwestern or steep rocky mountain singletrack on a 29er while I'm on my 26. Maybe I needed a lot more time on the 29 to get the hang of it, but it just seemed to be too much. I did like the way it rolled uphill over ledges, and how it would seem to carry speed through rough rolling terrain, but it just seemed like novelty to me, and I was eager to get back on a 26 inch race rig (the Trek Top Fuel to be more precise).
Luckily the Hub of Aspen's Jesse Bouchard, who also took the Superfly 100 out for a spin, was with me and he was pretty stoked on it. You can hear his opinions in the second half of the video.
