Exercise involving intense muscle contractions often result in muscle damage, soreness and inflammation. Athletes recover slowly from eccentric training and often face a drop in performance.
Many take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Naproxen, to reduce pain and inflammation. However, several recent studies found that NSAIDs slowed the healing rate from injury and might interfere with muscle hypertrophy. Researchers from the University of South Carolina, led by Mark Davis, found that curcumin reduced inflammation and promoted recovery following intense eccentric training in mice. Curcumin is a chemical found in the curry spice, turmeric and is responsible for its yellow color. It has been used for centuries to decrease inflammation and treat arthritis. This study was significant, because it showed that curcumin promoted recovery and decreased inflammation.
