Many athletes juice up their life by taking caffeine pills or drinking coffee or caffeinated beverages like JavaFit or Red Bull. Caffeine boosts energy and makes workouts easier and more intense. It works by stimulating the central nervous system. Most research shows that caffeine improves endurance by increasing fat use and sparing glycogen (stored carbohydrate) and boosts strength by improving the link between muscle activation and contraction. A study from the College of New Jersey, led by Jay Hoffman, found that JavaFit improved endurance on a stationary bike but had no effect on high-intensity exercise capacity (i.e., Wingate test). JavaFit contains 450 milligrams of caffeine, 1,200 milligrams of G. cambogia, 360 milligrams of C. aurantium extract and 225 micrograms of chromium polynicotinate. The International Olympic Committee removed it from their list of banned substances. Coffee, tea and chocolate are dietary staples for many people, so they gave up trying to ban it.
