Exercise performance drops in the heat. Physical activity increases heat in the body and high environmental temperatures make things worse. Maintaining body water is critical for controlling core temperature. Creatine and glycerol increase the body’s capacity to hold water. Researchers from Scotland found that supplementing with creatine and glycerol (alone or in combination) reduced heart rate, core temperature and perceived effort during endurance exercise in the heat (90°F, 70 percent humidity). While the combination of creatine and glycerol increased body water most, creatine by itself was just as effective in reducing the cardiovascular and thermal stresses of exercise. In the past, many sports medicine experts warned athletes to avoid taking creatine supplements when exercising in the heat. This study showed the opposite: creatine boosts heat tolerance.
