Push too hard and you can expect sore muscles. But Australian researchers found that supplementing with amino acids before, immediately after and periodically for four days after intense training reduced soreness and muscle damage. A previous study by Japanese researchers found that supplementing with branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) before a heavy squat workout decreased delayed onset muscle soreness and post-training fatigue (Journal of Nutrition, 136: 529S-532S, 2006). Amino acids taken before and the days after intense training increase the rate of protein synthesis and decrease the rate of protein breakdown. Amino acid supplements may help athletes pushing themselves to the limit push even harder. (International Journal Sports Nutrition Exercise Metabolism, 16:620-635, 2006)
