The East Coast is where the women are. The New York-metro area has 180,000 more women than men, while men outnumber women by 40,000 in Los Angeles.
National Geographic magazine discovered the gender imbalance by analyzing data from the 2000 U.S. Census. Right coast cities such as Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington and Boston had similar disparities. Surprisingly, men outnumbered women in Las Vegas— the city of pole dancers, escorts and high rollers. Single women are also in the minority in Seattle, Phoenix and Houston. With statistics like these, it’s easy to see why the characters in the TV show “Sex and the City” (the tale of four NYC women on the make) were so whiny and bitchy. (National Geographic, Feb. 2007)
