On Saturday 21 March, Peetu Piiroinen became the 2008/2009 Swatch TTR
Tour Champion. Not only this, but the 21 year old Burton rider became
the first Finn to take the title since the tours inception. With main
rival and snowboarding legend Shaun White out of the US Open with an
ankle injury, Piiroinen stomped the halfpipe event to claim second spot
and take the overall title.
Piiroinen has remained dominant this season, scoring top five finishes
at seven 6Star TTR Tour events. However, it was not all plain sailing
having missed the Oakley Arctic Challenge due to injury. Such was his
dominance however, contenders, including Kevin Pearce, Chas Guldemond
and Risto Mattila were unable to close the gap in the TTR points
standings.
The TTR Tour has evolved into one of the most competitive, visually
stunning sports events in the world, combining massive quarter pipes,
stomping slopestyle courses and canyon sized halfpipes, demanding the
best from the world’s best. The big brands have picked up on the appeal
of this new breed of competition, which this year was sponsored by,
among others, Burton, Nissan, Billabong, Swatch, Rockstar, Oakley,
O’Neill and T-Mobile. All this has helped create and nurture some of
the wildest extreme sport stunts ever seen.
This video captures reigning TTR Tour Champion Peetu Piiroinen, as he
stomps the various courses on this, the most successful TTR Tour to
date.
