People have their own ideas regarding the optimum number of training sessions per week. Some people do the same program religiously every other day, while others do sophisticated split routines that work specific body parts on different days of the week. Researchers ... from the University of Alabama evaluated the effects of rest time between exercise sessions on subsequent performance in the next workout. They evaluated performance following recovery of 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours after an exhausting weight-training session. Optimal recovery wasn’t consistent between subjects: some recovered after 48 hours while others weren’t recovered after 120 hours. Individual perceptions affected the results. Performance varied when people felt rested, hungry, strong or sleep-deprived. Is full recovery necessary for continued training gains? Few serious athletes ever feel completely recovered during each training session. (Journal Strength Conditioning Research, 20: 756-759, 2006)
