 Caffeine improves short-term power output and boosts endurance performance by increasing catecholamines such as adrenaline. Researchers from Spain found that caffeine (5 milligrams per kilogram bodyweight) increased exercise capacity, maximum heart rate and maximal oxygen consumption on a cycle ergometer. This is one more study of many showing that caffeine improves exercise performance. Curiously, the International Olympic Committee removed caffeine from its list of banned substances in 2005.
